Cape Verde’s veteran goalkeeper, Vozinha, is set to begin a new chapter in his career after agreeing to join Chilean football powerhouse Colo Colo following his outstanding performances at the FIFA World Cup.
The 40 year old shot stopper earned widespread praise for his remarkable displays during Cape Verde’s memorable tournament campaign, helping the nation capture the attention of football fans across the globe.
Colo Colo president Anibal Mosa confirmed that the experienced goalkeeper will arrive in Chile within the next few days to complete his medical examination before being officially unveiled at the club’s Monumental Stadium.
Vozinha, whose full name is Josimar Jose Evora Dias, was one of the standout performers of the World Cup. He produced several crucial saves during Cape Verde’s impressive goalless draw against eventual champions Spain in the group stage before delivering another outstanding performance in their dramatic 3 to 2 extra time defeat to finalists Argentina in the knockout phase.
His displays throughout the tournament significantly boosted his reputation, with Colo Colo identifying him as an ideal addition to strengthen the squad.
Speaking on the club’s decision, Mosa said Vozinha’s recent form made him the perfect choice.
“He is in excellent form, and that is why we decided to bring him to the club,” he said.
The experienced goalkeeper will join Colo Colo from Portuguese second division side Chaves. His journey to professional football has been far from conventional, having signed his first professional contract at the age of 26 before building a career that has taken him to clubs in Cyprus, Slovakia, Moldova and Angola.
Away from the pitch, Vozinha has also enjoyed a remarkable rise in popularity on social media. With support from Brazilian influencer Casimiro, his Instagram following has skyrocketed from around 50,000 followers to nearly 30 million after his World Cup exploits.
Colo Colo, one of Chile’s most successful football clubs with 34 league titles, currently sit comfortably at the top of the domestic league table as they continue their pursuit of another championship.
