The competition for Africa’s biggest literary honor has reached a crucial turning point, as eleven outstanding poets have been selected to advance in the race for the 2026 Nigeria Prize for Literature. Sponsored by NLNG, the prestigious annual award comes with a $100,000 cash prize and celebrates the absolute best in African creative writing.
This year’s focus shifts to poetry, continuing a 22-year tradition that rotates annually between prose fiction, poetry, drama, and children’s literature. Out of an impressive pool of 223 submissions received for the contest, a longlist of eleven exceptional poetry collections has successfully navigated the fierce competition.
According to updates monitored by Zoyols News, the longlisted titles, arranged in alphabetical order, include Adult Love by Tanure Ojaide, Bakandimiya by Saddiq Dzukogi, Black Passport by Paul Akpomuje, 2000 Blacks by Ajibola Tolase, Ceremony for The Nameless by Theresa Lola, and Corpus: Animistic Verses by Ayo Oyeku.
Completing the eleven-man longlist are Floral’s Love Colony by Tares Oburumu, The Origin of Wounds by Malik Gbolahan, The Years of Blood by Adebayo Agarau, Unbind Me Now by James Ugwu Eze, and Why Does God Need a Gun by Ogaga Ifowodo.
Unveiling the titles, the Advisory Board led by Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo highlighted the extraordinary depth and diversity embedded in the selected works. The board pointed out that the poets managed to revisit historical events, challenge established narratives, and shed light on how individuals and communities endure through violence, oppression, and societal breakdown.
Beyond their thematic weight, the longlisted collections were praised for their impressive range of stylistic techniques. Many of the authors cleverly blended oral traditions, local folklore, and contemporary realities, using fluid and deeply evocative language to explore complex human experiences.
With this longlist now public, the panel of judges moves into an even more rigorous phase of critical evaluation. Readers and literary enthusiasts across the continent can look forward to a trimmed shortlist of three finalists in August, culminating in the official announcement of the overall winner later in October.
