The Federal Government has officially graduated the first cohort of 18 rescued Chibok girls, marking a significant step in their journey toward economic independence. These young women successfully completed an intensive vocational skills acquisition program designed to provide them with both practical training and the necessary resources to build sustainable futures.
During the ceremony held in Yola, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, announced that each graduate received a comprehensive support package. This included essential starter packs and a direct entrepreneurship grant of one million naira. Among the group, 14 graduates specialized in tailoring, while four focused on catering services.
The government has confirmed that this is only the beginning of a broader support initiative. Future plans include similar financial and equipment support for the next batch of 33 Chibok girls, as well as those currently pursuing degrees at the American University of Nigeria. The minister noted that the government’s commitment extends to the families of these survivors, with plans to provide direct financial assistance and equipment like deep freezers and sewing machines to help support their livelihoods.
Addressing the graduates directly, the minister encouraged them to transcend the trauma of their past. She urged them to reject the narrative defined by the events of twelve years ago and instead focus on forging new identities built on excellence, creativity, and personal purpose. Her message was clear: their potential to innovate and succeed is far greater than the pain of their history.
Local officials and academic leaders in Yola praised the initiative as a vital lifeline. The Adamawa State Commissioner for Women Affairs expressed gratitude for the federal intervention, noting that these skills are essential for self-reliance. Meanwhile, representatives from the training consultancy expressed optimism, looking forward to seeing these women transition into successful entrepreneurs who will contribute positively to the nation’s economy.
