Nigerian chef and Guinness World Record holder, Hilda Effiong Bassey, better known as Hilda Baci, has revealed that more than 20,000 people have signed up to witness her attempt to cook the world’s largest pot of jollof rice.
In a video shared on her Instagram page on Wednesday, Baci expressed surprise and gratitude at the overwhelming response, admitting that the turnout far exceeded her expectations. She explained that the original venue, Muri Okunola Park in Victoria Island, Lagos, could only hold between 3,000 and 3,500 people — a fraction of the number that registered.
“Who am I that you all care this much about what I’m doing? It really means a lot to me, and I don’t take it for granted,” she said warmly, adding that the safety and comfort of her supporters remain top priority.
To accommodate the massive crowd, she confirmed that the event has been moved to a larger venue — the Eko Hotels and Suites, also in Victoria Island. The cooking challenge is now scheduled to take place on Friday, September 12, 2025, beginning at 9 a.m.
Baci emphasized that the event remains completely free for everyone, both in terms of registration and access to the jollof rice that will be prepared. “You don’t have to pay a thing. Not for registration, not for the food. I can’t wait to see you there,” she assured.
