The newly elected Chairman of the Nigerian Polo Association, Suleiman Abubakar, has reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the game of polo in Nigeria, promising to build on existing achievements while taking the sport to greater heights both locally and internationally.
Abubakar made the pledge in Ibadan shortly after emerging as the new leader of the Nigerian Polo Association, expressing appreciation to members of the polo community for the confidence they placed in him.
He assured stakeholders that efforts to expand the reach and popularity of Nigerian polo would continue, with the goal of strengthening the country’s position as one of Africa’s leading forces in the sport.
According to him, polo remains one of the country’s major corporate sports with enormous commercial potential. He stressed that the association is determined to establish its own major tournament while ensuring that all accredited polo clubs continue to host their annual competitions during each playing season.
Speaking during his acceptance address, Abubakar described polo as a sport built on rich history, strong traditions, and a unique spirit of friendship among players and enthusiasts. He expressed confidence that the game is entering a new era that will bring greater success and wider recognition in the years ahead.
The new association chairman also unveiled plans to establish a National Polo Centre in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen the sport’s development across the country.
He further disclosed that work is underway to ensure the Nigerian Gold Cup Open Tournament becomes a fully established annual competition beginning next year, a move expected to further raise the profile of polo in Nigeria.
