Yamal Makes History With Third Straight Kopa Trophy Win

Zoyols News

Barcelona and Spain forward Lamine Yamal has made history after winning the 2026 Men’s Young Talent of the Year award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, becoming the first player to claim the honour three years in a row.

The 19 year old received the award on Monday night, adding to his previous victories in 2024 and 2025. The prize, popularly known as the Kopa Trophy, recognises the world’s best young male footballer and is presented during the annual Ballon d’Or ceremony organised by France Football in collaboration with UEFA.

Yamal’s latest achievement further highlights his remarkable rise in football. Having emerged as one of Barcelona’s most exciting young prospects, he has developed into a key figure for both his club and the Spanish national team.

The winger faced competition from several promising young players, including Barcelona teammate Pau Cubarsí, who was also nominated for the award. In his reaction, Yamal thanked his teammates at club and international level and acknowledged the quality of the other contenders.

He also expressed his appreciation for Cubarsí, indicating that he would have been pleased to see the Barcelona defender win the prize. His comments highlighted the respect between the two young players, who have both continued to attract attention for their performances.

Yamal first won the Kopa Trophy in 2024, aged just 17, before retaining it in 2025. His third consecutive victory in 2026 sets him apart from previous recipients and underlines the consistency of his performances at such a young age.

His progress has been driven by his excellent dribbling, creativity, composure in one on one situations and growing influence in Barcelona’s attack. He has also established himself as an important member of Spain’s senior team, earning recognition for his performances against some of the strongest sides in international football.

The latest honour also reflects Barcelona’s continued ability to develop young talent. Cubarsí has emerged as a promising defender, while the club’s academy system continues to provide opportunities for young players to establish themselves in the senior team.

The Kopa Trophy is awarded by a jury of former Ballon d’Or winners, who assess the nominees’ performances during the relevant period. Winning it for a third consecutive year gives Yamal another major individual milestone before his 20th birthday.

With the latest recognition secured, the Barcelona forward will be looking to maintain his impressive form and help both his club and Spain compete for more major honours. His achievement further strengthens his growing reputation as one of the leading young talents in world football.
