The changes, which take effect on November 5, will reduce the number of DStv packages from six to four, with monthly subscriptions ranging from KES 750 for DStv Starter to KES 7,300 for DStv Ultimate. The company is also introducing SuperSport KICKOFF, a new channel that will broadcast selected live football matches from major competitions, including the English Premier League.
The restructuring is one of the company’s biggest changes to its Kenyan subscription lineup in recent years. Under the new arrangement, customers will choose from Starter, Select, Sports and Ultimate, with some entertainment and sports content previously reserved for more expensive packages becoming available at lower prices.
MultiChoice Kenya Chief Executive Officer Nzola Miranda described the changes as a major step in the company’s 30 year journey in the country. He said the goal was to make quality entertainment more affordable and accessible to a wider range of households.
DStv Starter will cost KES 750 per month and provide access to up to 116 channels, including Maisha Magic Plus, Maisha Magic Loko, Maisha Magic Poa, Cartoon Network, Disney Junior, LaLiga, Novela+, Pearl Magic and Movie Legends. Subscribers will also receive SuperSport KICKOFF, which will carry selected live football matches.
The DStv Select package, priced at KES 1,500 monthly, will offer up to 149 channels covering local and international entertainment, films, television series, children’s programmes and selected sporting events. The package is designed for families seeking a broad range of content at a lower subscription cost.
For sports lovers, DStv Sports will cost KES 3,000 per month and include up to 159 channels. The package will provide access to Premier League matches, the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, as well as WWE and UFC events.
Unlike a sports only subscription, DStv Sports will also include the general entertainment channels available on DStv Select, giving subscribers access to films, series and other programmes alongside live sporting action.
At the top end, DStv Ultimate will remain the most comprehensive package, costing KES 7,300 monthly for up to 180 channels. In addition to the content available through the Sports and Movies and Series offerings, subscribers will receive premium sporting events covering Formula 1, MotoGP, cricket, rugby, ATP tennis and major golf tournaments.
The revised prices will also apply to DStv Stream, allowing customers to enjoy the packages through the company’s streaming service without depending entirely on satellite television.
GOtv also gets new subscription packages
The changes will extend to GOtv, which will also operate under four packages, with monthly prices ranging from KES 300 to KES 3,000.
GOtv Easy, the cheapest option, will cost KES 300 and offer 30 channels, including selected live sports, Match of the Week, SuperSport KICKOFF, SuperSport Africa, Moonbug, Maisha Magic Plus, Maisha Magic Loko and Maisha Magic Bongo.
GOtv Starter will cost KES 750 for 47 channels, while GOtv Select will be available for KES 1,500 with 66 channels covering entertainment, children’s programmes, films, series and selected sports.
The top GOtv Sports package will cost KES 3,000 monthly and provide 73 channels, including coverage of the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, WWE and UFC. It will also include general entertainment content available on GOtv Select.
The latest adjustments come as traditional pay television providers face growing competition from streaming platforms, changing viewing habits and pressure on household budgets. By offering more flexible packages and lowering the cost of accessing selected premium content, MultiChoice is seeking to remain competitive in Kenya’s changing television market.
The company has operated in Kenya for 30 years and is now part of France’s Canal+, which acquired a controlling interest in the South African media group. The deal gives MultiChoice access to Canal+’s international content relationships, distribution network and wider global reach.
Despite the changes to its subscription structure, the company says it remains committed to producing more African content for local and international audiences. New productions are expected in the coming months, including a show titled Chamaa.
Nomsa Philiso, executive vice president of content at Canal+ Africa, said MultiChoice had developed a strong understanding of African audiences and the stories they enjoy. She added that Canal+ shared that commitment and was investing in African storytelling through increased production and wider international distribution.
New decoder and installation prices
As part of its DStv Expect+ campaign, MultiChoice will also reduce the upfront cost of getting connected to its satellite television service.
From November 5, customers will be able to purchase an HD decoder and satellite dish for KES 1,500, while installation will cost KES 500.
The revised subscription packages, expanded sports access and lower equipment costs form part of the company’s broader effort to make its services more accessible while responding to the changing needs of television viewers in Kenya.
