2026 Lewa Safari Marathon: Tech and data take center stage in race for wildlife

Zoyols News

Organizers of the Lewa Safari Marathon have announced that the event is increasingly leaning on telecommunications and data-driven tools to amplify its conservation efforts. As entries officially opened on Tuesday for the 2026 edition, the focus shifted toward how modern technology is transforming the way wildlife is protected in one of Kenya’s most vital ecosystems.

Since its inception in 2000, the marathon has raised approximately KSh1.3 billion. This year’s race, set for June 27 at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, is expected to generate an additional KSh15 million. These funds are no longer just supporting traditional ranger patrols but are being funneled into a digital infrastructure that allows for real-time monitoring and rapid response to threats like poaching.

Safaricom, a long-term lead sponsor of the event, has been instrumental in providing the connectivity needed to link rangers across the vast savannah. This network supports mobile data collection and coordination, ensuring that field information is shared instantly. Mike Watson, the CEO of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, noted that every participant’s step contributes to a measurable impact, specifically highlighting how digital systems are securing habitats for endangered species like the black rhino and Grevy’s zebra.

The integration of technology goes beyond simple communication. Global tech firm Huawei has also backed the initiative for nearly two decades, deploying solutions that allow for advanced data analytics. These systems include GPS-enabled wildlife tracking and digital monitoring tools that can identify unusual animal movements or unauthorized human activity within the protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. By analyzing these data trends, conservationists can intervene much faster when risks emerge.

The benefits of this digital push are also being felt by the rural communities surrounding the conservancy. The same infrastructure that protects wildlife is now being used to facilitate mobile health services and digital education programs. Funds from the marathon have already supported over 40,000 clinic visits and numerous school initiatives, many of which are now adopting digital record-keeping to improve their reach and efficiency.

Drawing participants from more than 40 countries, the Lewa Safari Marathon remains a unique blend of professional sport and environmental advocacy. With categories ranging from a full marathon to a children’s run, the event continues to prove that combining athletic endurance with scalable, data-driven technology is a winning formula for the future of conservation.
