INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan has assured Nigerians that the commission will stay neutral in the 2027 general elections and will not back any candidate or political party.
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday at the signing of the First National Peace Accord on Issue-Based Campaigns, Amupitan said INEC has no interest in who wins or loses any election. He described the commission as an impartial umpire committed only to running a lawful, transparent, credible and inclusive process.
He urged political parties and candidates to focus their campaigns on issues like the economy, security, infrastructure, healthcare and education, rather than personal attacks or inflammatory rhetoric. Amupitan also warned against spreading misinformation and disinformation, noting that false claims could damage public confidence in the electoral process.
The chairman revealed that INEC is preparing logistics for about 1.4 million ad hoc personnel across more than 176,000 polling units. He stressed that credible elections require cooperation from all stakeholders and said the commission is introducing additional transparency measures in its result management process for the coming polls.
