The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is strengthening its partnership with the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, as part of efforts to remove duplicate voter records ahead of future elections.
The commitment was made known by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, when he received the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker Odusote, alongside members of her management team during a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Prof. Amupitan said the collaboration follows the signing of the National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026, describing the development as an important step toward building a more secure, transparent and credible electoral system.
According to him, both agencies have several areas where they can work closely together, especially in voter registration, identity verification and the removal of duplicate entries from the voter register. He noted that the partnership would help improve the accuracy of voter data while increasing public confidence in the electoral process.
He also explained that INEC’s newly introduced online Continuous Voter Registration platform already requires every applicant to provide a National Identification Number for identity verification. He added that deeper integration between INEC and NIMC would make voter registration easier for eligible citizens while further protecting the integrity of the voters register.
Prof. Amupitan stressed the need for both organisations to remain ahead of emerging technological developments, saying stronger cooperation is necessary to protect sensitive data as digital systems continue to evolve.
He said that as technology rapidly advances into the age of artificial intelligence, both agencies must work together to establish reliable safeguards and effective protocols that will guarantee the security, integrity and credibility of their data systems.
