The race for the prestigious Awujale stool in Ijebu Ode has officially intensified, with 95 aspirants stepping forward to succeed the late Oba Sikiru Adetona. The long-standing vacancy followed the passing of the revered monarch on July 13, 2025, marking the end of an extraordinary 65-year reign that defined the history of the kingdom.

The potential successors emerged during a pivotal nomination meeting held by the Fusengbuwa ruling house at Bisrod Hall in the GRA area of Ijebu Ode. Among the 94 princes vying for the throne, a lone female aspirant, Princess Oluwakemi Onanuga, a lawyer, has also joined the race. The gathering, which was monitored by Reports, showcased a list of heavyweights and professionals eager to lead the Ijebu people.

Some of the prominent names in the race include Giwa Abiodun Onanuga, husband to a former Deputy Governor of Ogun State; Dr. Kunle Hassan, a distinguished ophthalmologist and the founder of the Eye Foundation Hospital; and Otunba Fatai Arowolo, the head of Aron Construction. These individuals represent a mix of traditional pedigree and modern professional excellence, reflecting the high stakes involved in selecting a worthy successor.

The nomination session was led by the Chairman of the ruling house, Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, supported by his deputy, Prince Adedokun Ajidagba, and Professor Fassy Yusuf. Officials from the Ijebu Ode Local Government, including the Secretary, Abiodun Oke, were also present to observe the proceedings and ensure transparency throughout the exercise.

With the nomination phase concluded, Otunba Owoyemi confirmed that the task of choosing the next monarch now rests entirely with the kingmakers. He expressed confidence that a final decision would be reached within the next month. To ensure a peaceful transition, all 95 contestants have reportedly signed a formal agreement to accept the final choice of the kingmakers without friction.

The atmosphere remains one of cautious optimism and harmony as the kingdom waits for the smoke to turn white. The ruling house has fulfilled its duty by providing a pool of candidates, and it is now expected that the kingmakers will act conscientiously to select a leader who can build upon the massive legacy left by Oba Adetona.
