Ademola Lookman wasted no time making an impact at Atletico Madrid, scoring on his debut as the team secured a Copa del Rey quarter-final win over Real Betis on Thursday. The English-born winger netted Atlético’s third goal in the 37th minute with a composed finish, following strikes from David Hancko in the 12th minute and Giuliano Simeone in the 30th.
The 28-year-old’s debut had been hinted at by coach Diego Simeone the day before the match. Lookman joined Atletico this winter alongside Rodri Mendoza from Elche and Obed Vargas from Seattle Sounders, and Simeone praised the trio ahead of the game, highlighting Lookman’s credentials as the 2024 African Player of the Year.
“Three important players have arrived, and we’re going to need them as we push to finish the season strongly,” Simeone said. “Lookman integrated with the group immediately. You could see his physical strength, pace, ability to change the game, and threat in the final third. We hope he can contribute as he believes he can, while forming the partnerships needed for the team’s success. It’s about bringing quality players together.”
Lookman’s debut goal not only showcased his technical ability but also signaled his readiness to become a key figure in Simeone’s squad as Atletico Madrid chase silverware this season.
