Temitope Adeshina, Nigeria’s national record holder in the women’s high jump, has been named Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week after an impressive start to the season at the Corky Classic.
Adeshina’s victory at the meet included a clearance of 1.93m (6ft 4in), tying her for the No. 2 all-time mark in Texas Tech history. Her jump also currently ranks second in the world for the season and is the best in NCAA Division I on the women’s side. This marks her second indoor weekly award and her third Big 12 track honour overall.
The accolade was shared with her Texas Tech teammate, Jonathan Seremes, and Baylor’s Tiriah Kelley. Seremes, making his Texas Tech debut, claimed the triple jump title with a mark of 16.79m (55ft 1in), placing him No. 1 in the world and NCAA standings. Kelley, meanwhile, opened her senior season by winning the 200m dash in an NCAA-leading 22.56 seconds, breaking her own program record from the same meet last year.
At 27, Adeshina is entering her third year at Texas Tech with momentum. She set Nigeria’s national high jump records—both indoor and outdoor—in 2024 and captured her first NCAA title in 2025 with a clearance of 1.94m at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia. She also competed at the Paris 2024 Olympics, becoming the second Nigerian woman to participate in the Olympic high jump after Doreen Amata.
Her personal best of 1.97m, set at the Big 12 Championships in Kansas in May 2025, helped her secure her third national title and cemented her place among Nigeria’s top athletes. Adeshina is expected to return to action this weekend as Texas Tech hosts the Wes Kittley High School Classic and the Stan Scott Invitational, aiming to build on her already impressive season.
