Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has been appointed by the African Development Bank as the African champion for its ambitious seven billion dollar aviation transformation programme targeted at reshaping the continent’s air transport sector.
The appointment followed the bank’s recognition of Nigeria’s growing role in aviation reforms and its commitment to improving policies within the industry.
According to a statement released by the minister’s media aide, Tunde Moshood, Keyamo was also invited to participate in the AfDB annual meeting held in Brazzaville on May 28, 2026. During the gathering, Nigeria and the bank were expected to formally sign a letter of intent to begin their partnership on the project.
Known as the Integrated Aviation Transformation Programme for Africa, the initiative is designed to modernize aviation across the continent through support from private investors, institutional partners and concessional funding sources.
The programme seeks to address the long standing imbalance in global aviation, where Africa, despite accounting for nearly 18 percent of the world’s population, contributes less than three percent of global air traffic.
Through the initiative, the African Development Bank hopes to strengthen infrastructure, improve airline operations and reposition Africa’s aviation industry to compete more effectively on the global stage.
With his new role, Keyamo is expected to use his experience and influence within the aviation sector to help drive the programme’s objectives across African countries.
The African Development Bank first unveiled the aviation transformation initiative in March 2026 as part of wider efforts aimed at bringing Africa’s aviation industry closer to international standards.
