Former Super Eagles goalkeeper coach Alloy Agu has thrown his support behind Udinese shot stopper Maduka Okoye as a strong contender for Nigeria’s number one position at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, especially if Stanley Nwabali is unable to return to full fitness before the tournament.
Agu, who spent years working closely with the national team, shared his view in a chat with Footy Africa. He noted that while the hope remains for Nwabali to recover in time, Nigeria has dependable alternatives who can step up when needed.
He urged Nigerians to keep faith with the goalkeeping department, adding that Okoye has grown in confidence and ability. According to him, the team only needs to trust whoever gets the nod, because every goalkeeper in the squad understands the responsibility that comes with wearing the gloves.
Agu expressed optimism that whoever stands between the posts will be ready to deliver when called upon, saying the crucial thing is to support them and give them the confidence required to perform at their best.
