The political landscape in the South-West is witnessing a significant shift as the 2027 elections draw closer. Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, a prominent governorship aspirant for the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State, has extended a warm welcome to Hon. Wasiu Ajirotutu following his high-profile defection to the PDP. Ajirotutu, who was the 2023 Ogun East senatorial candidate for the New Nigeria People’s Party, officially made the move during a major stakeholders’ meeting in Abeokuta on Friday, January 23, 2026.

The event was more than just a routine political gathering; it served as a platform for the region’s top power brokers to consolidate their strength. Ajirotutu was formally received into the fold by the Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, and the 2023 Ogun State PDP governorship candidate, Hon. Ladi Adebutu. The presence of these leaders underscored the importance of this realignment for the party’s future in the region.

In his congratulatory message, Ambassador Ajadi described Ajirotutu’s decision as a strategic win for the people. He noted that the move is a testament to the PDP’s growing reputation as a credible alternative for politicians who prioritize grassroots development and accountable leadership. To Ajadi, this transition isn’t just about changing party logos but about aligning with an ideology centered on equity and good governance.

The addition of Ajirotutu is expected to provide a substantial boost to the PDP’s influence in Ogun State. His active role during the 2023 general elections proved his connection to the electorate, a factor that Ajadi believes will be vital for the party’s success in 2027. He praised Governor Makinde and other South-West leaders for their efforts in fostering a sense of unity, which was clearly on display during the Abeokuta meeting.

Political analysts suggest that this move is part of a broader trend of realignment across the South-West. As the PDP intensifies its consultations and strengthens its internal structures, the party appears to be speaking with a more unified voice. This renewed solidarity is seen as a foundational step toward building a formidable force capable of taking on future electoral challenges.

The Abeokuta session also allowed party faithful to review their current strategies and reaffirm their commitment to social justice and economic development. With influential figures like Ajirotutu coming on board and internal divisions seemingly being patched up, the PDP is clearly signaling its readiness to be the dominant political force in the region once again.
