The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has committed to the full implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda across all 774 local government areas in the country. This pledge was made during a high-profile inauguration ceremony held on Monday in Abuja, where the association signaled a new era of grassroots development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at his inauguration, the Acting National President of ALGON, Iliyasu Zakari, emphasized that this move is a testament to the association’s dedication to national progress. Zakari, who also leads the Agwara Local Government Council in Niger State, noted that the event marks a vital step toward closer collaboration with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. He assured that the Board of Trustees is prepared to provide the kind of purposeful leadership necessary to drive the President’s agenda deep into rural communities.
The Chairman of ALGON’s Board of Trustees, Shaban Ohinoyi, described the gathering as a defining moment for the organization’s stability and unity. Ohinoyi highlighted that the association has successfully moved past previous internal hurdles and is now better positioned to impact the lives of citizens where governance matters most. He expressed confidence that a repositioned ALGON would make significant contributions to the nation’s overall growth.
A notable highlight of the event was the appointment of Senator Simon Lalong, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters, as the Patron of ALGON. In his acceptance speech, Lalong praised President Tinubu’s consistent advocacy for local government autonomy. He pointed out that the President’s decision to take the matter to the Supreme Court shows a genuine desire to empower administrators at the local level.
Lalong further disclosed that the National Assembly is currently prioritizing constitutional amendments to resolve lingering issues around local government independence. He noted that the legislative process is well underway and that Nigerians can expect to see tangible results from these efforts soon. This renewed synergy between ALGON and federal stakeholders suggests a major push to accelerate development and deepen the quality of governance across every corner of the country.
