Anthony Joshua to Hang Up Gloves? Family Speaks After Fatal Crash

Zoyols Blog

In a heartbreaking development for the sports world, former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is reportedly considering a permanent exit from boxing. This follows a devastating car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway last week that tragically claimed the lives of two of his closest associates and longtime team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.

The news of his potential retirement was shared by his uncle, Adedamola Joshua, who spoke about the immense emotional toll the sport has taken on their family. The heavyweight star informed his family of his decision in private following the tragedy. His uncle noted that while Joshua has reached the pinnacle of his career, the constant fear of seeing him injured in the ring has been a source of significant trauma for his loved ones.

For the Joshua family, the decision brings a sense of relief amidst their current grief. Adedamola explained that the family often finds it difficult to watch his fights, describing the intense anxiety they feel every time he takes a blow or is knocked down. He expressed that they are happy he is choosing to step away while the “ovation is loudest,” prioritizing his well-being and peace of mind over further athletic achievements.

The accident has left a deep scar on the boxer, who was in Nigeria to connect with his roots and celebrate his recent victory over Jake Paul. Joshua, who survived the crash with minor physical injuries, has spent the last few days mourning his friends and supporting their bereaved families. Over the weekend, he attended an emotional funeral service for Ghami and Ayodele in London, where he was seen providing comfort to their relatives.

While Joshua has not yet made a formal public announcement to the global boxing community, his family’s comments suggest that his priorities have shifted fundamentally. After a decade at the top of the heavyweight division, the man who inspired millions may be ready to trade the boxing gloves for a life focused on family, recovery, and honoring the memory of the brothers he lost.
