Aston Villa Eye Shock Move for 40-Year-Old Sergio Ramos

Zoyols News

Aston Villa are reportedly considering a surprise move for former Real Madrid and Spain captain Sergio Ramos as manager Unai Emery looks for defensive reinforcements.

The 40 year old centre back has emerged as a possible short term option for Villa after spending several months as a free agent. Ramos has been without a club since leaving Mexican side Monterrey in December 2025.

Reports from Spain suggest that discussions between the player and Aston Villa have taken place, with the possibility of a medical examination also being mentioned. However, no agreement has been officially confirmed by either the club or Ramos, meaning the proposed move remains subject to further negotiations and the necessary medical and registration processes.

Villa’s reported interest comes at a time when the club are dealing with defensive concerns early in the 2026/27 season. Injuries involving Pau Torres and Ian Maatsen are understood to have increased the need for additional options at the back.

Ramos’ status as a free agent could make him an attractive option, particularly because Villa would not need to negotiate a conventional transfer fee. The veteran defender is also believed to have continued training since leaving Monterrey as he considers the next stage of his career.

A move to Villa Park would give Ramos the chance to finally play in the Premier League, a competition he has never featured in during his long career.

Ramos began his professional career with Sevilla before joining Real Madrid in 2005. He went on to spend 16 highly successful years with the Spanish giants, making hundreds of appearances and winning major domestic and European honours.

He left Madrid in 2021 for Paris Saint Germain before returning to Sevilla for a second spell. His career later took him to Mexico, where he joined Monterrey and remained until his departure in late 2025.

The potential move to Aston Villa also carries a strong Spanish connection. Emery has extensive experience working with Spanish players, while Villa sporting director Monchi knows Ramos from their time at Sevilla.

Ramos would bring considerable experience if the deal goes through. With Real Madrid, he won four Champions League titles and several La Liga trophies, while also serving as club captain.

His achievements with Spain were equally significant. He was part of the team that won the 2010 World Cup and helped the country claim the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.

Ramos made 180 appearances for Spain and scored 23 goals, an impressive international record for a central defender. His goalscoring ability, leadership and experience at the highest level became major features of his career.

There are, however, questions surrounding his lack of competitive football in recent months.

Ramos made 34 official appearances for Monterrey and scored eight goals before leaving the club in December 2025. His extended period away from competitive action means his physical condition would likely be an important consideration before Villa commit to a deal.

Another issue could be his potential involvement in the Champions League. Reports indicate that Ramos was not included in Villa’s initial UEFA squad registration, which could affect his availability in the competition if he joins the club.

For now, the move remains unconfirmed. Although reports suggest discussions are progressing, Aston Villa have yet to announce an agreement with the veteran defender.

If the deal is eventually completed, Ramos would begin a completely new chapter of his career at the age of 40, finally experiencing English football after more than two decades playing at the highest level in Spain, France and Mexico.

For Villa, his arrival could provide additional defensive cover and experience, while Ramos would have the opportunity to return to competitive football and play in the Premier League for the first time.
