The African Union (AU) has welcomed the U.S. House of Representatives’ bipartisan approval of a three-year extension to the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which grants duty-free access for over 1,800 African products to the U.S. market.
AU Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf described the vote on January 12, 2026, as a significant affirmation of the longstanding economic partnership between Africa and the United States. He praised the bipartisan support in the House as a clear signal of America’s commitment to promoting trade, investment, and shared prosperity across the continent.
“For more than 20 years, AGOA has been a cornerstone of U.S.–Africa economic relations, driving industrialisation, job creation, and regional value chains while supporting inclusive growth,” Youssouf said. He emphasized the act’s role in strengthening Africa’s position as a trusted partner in global trade.
As the bill now moves to the U.S. Senate, the AU has urged timely approval to ensure continuity in economic cooperation. Youssouf highlighted the AU’s commitment to working with the U.S. government, Congress, and other stakeholders to maintain AGOA as a platform for sustainable development and mutually beneficial trade.
Since its enactment in 2000, AGOA has boosted African exports by 150% and supported over 100,000 jobs, particularly in sectors such as apparel and agriculture. The program also plays a strategic role in fostering closer U.S.–Africa ties amid growing global competition.
While the trade program expired in September 2025, several African nations, including Nigeria, have yet to fully leverage its benefits. South Africa remains one of the largest beneficiaries, especially in automotive exports, though recent political tensions with the U.S. could affect its participation.
The extension, set to run until 2028, promises to sustain economic partnerships across 32 eligible African countries and continue supporting regional value chains, industrial growth, and job creation throughout the continent.
