The England international is expected to travel to Spain on Thursday to complete his medical before finalising the move, which is being lined up ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
Although Bayern Munich had previously shown strong interest in the player, they are not expected to make a counter move at this stage, despite earlier reports linking them with a potential attacking trio involving Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz.
Gordon leaves Newcastle after a strong campaign in which he finished as the club’s top scorer with 18 goals. Interestingly, he was left out of the final four matches of the season, a decision understood to be aimed at preserving his fitness amid growing transfer speculation.
The forward had only recently committed his long term future to Newcastle by signing a contract extension in October 2024, with four years still remaining on his deal. However, club officials had previously indicated that player sales may be necessary to support future recruitment plans.
His expected arrival at Barcelona also brings added attention to the situation of Marcus Rashford, who is currently on loan at the Catalan club from Manchester United.
Rashford has expressed a desire to continue at Barcelona beyond his loan spell and is even said to be open to a reduction in wages to make a permanent stay possible. However, Manchester United are unwilling to sanction another loan move and are holding firm on their valuation.
With Gordon’s arrival set to increase competition in attacking areas, Rashford may now see the upcoming World Cup as a key opportunity to strengthen his case and convince Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and the club hierarchy to retain him beyond this season.
