FC Barcelona is currently forced to rethink its summer transfer plans as the pursuit of Julián Álvarez becomes increasingly difficult. While the Catalan giants had originally pinpointed the Argentine forward as the ideal long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, Atlético Madrid’s uncompromising position has thrown a wrench into those ambitions.
Atlético has placed a staggering €200 million valuation on Álvarez. Such a figure would rank among the highest transfer fees in the history of the sport, creating a massive hurdle for a Barcelona side still navigating complex financial constraints. The reality for the Blaugrana is that they cannot afford to pour their entire budget into a single signing, especially with multiple areas of the squad requiring urgent reinforcement.
To bridge the gap, Barcelona has explored the possibility of a player-plus-cash arrangement. The idea is to lower the immediate financial burden by including current squad members in the deal. However, this strategy is expected to fall flat at the Metropolitano. Atlético Madrid is under no pressure to sell its star asset, and their current financial stability means they have little reason to accept anything less than a record-breaking straight-cash offer.
As the negotiations for Álvarez reach a standstill, Victor Osimhen has emerged as a serious and perhaps more logical alternative. The Nigerian striker is being closely monitored by the Barcelona board, who view him as a world-class talent that aligns better with their current spending power. With an estimated valuation of around €75 million, Osimhen represents a much more attainable goal than the World Cup winner.
If Atlético continues to hold its hard-line stance, as many insiders expect, Barcelona is prepared to shift its full attention toward the Napoli marksman. Choosing Osimhen would allow the club to secure a prolific goalscorer while leaving enough room in the budget to address other gaps in the team, making it a move that balances both ambition and financial responsibility.
