It was a weekend of deep reflection and celebration as the 1995 set of Government College Bauchi (GOCOBA) gathered to mark 30 years since their graduation. The milestone reunion was far more than a walk down memory lane; it served as a platform for the old boys to reaffirm their dedication to the educational institutions that laid the foundation for their success.
The group visited both Government College Bauchi in Kangere and General Hassan Usman Katsina Bauchi, where they held productive discussions with school administrators. These visits were highly symbolic, representing a bridge between the school’s past and its future. The alumni took the opportunity to assess the current state of the facilities and pledged their continued support to ensure the next generation of students receives a high-quality education.
Leading the delegation was Engr. Bello Babayo Bello, the Executive Director of Networks at the Niger Delta Power Holding Company and the Head Boy of the 1995 set. He spoke passionately about the role of alumni networks, noting that they are vital lifelines for schools. According to him, the strength of an institution often depends on the mentorship and resources provided by those who once walked its halls.
The gathering also featured insights from Dr. Ayuba Zakar, the Medical Director of the Yobe State Specialist Hospital in Potiskum. He credited the discipline instilled in them during their teenage years for the professional heights they have reached. His message was clear: the unity the class has maintained for three decades must now be translated into tangible projects that improve the learning environment for current students.
Security and public service were also represented at the event, with CSP Haruna S. Abubakar of the Police Mobile Force in Edo State commending his classmates for their steadfastness. He urged them to remain active in their alma mater’s affairs, reminding them that their success is a testament to the school’s legacy.
The diversity of the 1995 set was evident in the caliber of attendees, which included figures like Rilwanu Shehu of the Jos Electricity Distribution Company, Engr. Isa Mohammed of the NNPC, and Hon. Ali Baba Manu of the Gombe State House of Assembly. The reunion successfully highlighted how the school’s influence has spread across various sectors of Nigerian life, from engineering and medicine to lawmaking and law enforcement.
As the celebrations concluded, the message remained focused on impact. The old boys left Bauchi not just with memories of their youth, but with a clear roadmap for how they intend to give back to the schools that helped shape their lives.
