In a significant move to improve the welfare of religious leaders, the Zamfara State Government has announced a salary upgrade for over 11,300 Juma’at imams and other Islamic clerics across the state. This new pay structure, which is set to take effect from January 2026, was confirmed by Governor Dauda Lawal as part of his administration’s broader commitment to supporting those who provide spiritual leadership in the community.
Currently, the state spends approximately N81.8 million every month to cover the stipends of these clerics, as well as the salaries of mosque cleaners. The decision for the upward review followed a recommendation from the committee handling the state’s integrated E-Payment system. Governor Lawal assured the religious leaders that the adjustment is designed to provide them with more comfort and stability as they carry out their duties.
Beyond the financial announcement, the Governor used the opportunity to seek spiritual support in the face of the state’s ongoing security concerns. He specifically appealed to the imams to observe “Al-Qunut”—special supplications—during each of the five daily prayers. This call for divine intervention is aimed at ending the wave of banditry that has troubled the region for years.
In a direct appeal, the Governor urged the clerics to pray for the exposure of anyone involved in fueling the security crisis. He noted that it is essential to uncover those contributing to the menace of banditry, whether directly or indirectly, so that peace can finally return to the state. This gesture by the government is seen as a way to both empower the religious community and unite the people through faith during these challenging times.
