Nikita Bier has stepped down from his position as Head of Product at X, moving into an advisory role after overseeing a significant transformation of the social media platform’s user experience and product strategy.
Announcing the decision in a post on X, Bier described his time leading the product team as “the privilege of a lifetime.” He explained that the position had evolved into a nonstop responsibility, adding that he felt it was the right time to step back and take a break.
Reflecting on his time at the company, Bier said X achieved record growth in both new user signups and overall engagement during his leadership. He also noted that the platform climbed 70 places on Apple’s App Store rankings over the past year while undergoing major improvements across several core features.
According to him, extensive work was carried out to enhance the timeline, Android application, onboarding process, notifications and chat experience. He added that nearly 30 new products were introduced within the past 400 days, alongside the rollout of Country of Origin labels on user profiles and stronger protections against artificial intelligence driven bot activity.
Following his transition, product leadership responsibilities will be shared among several senior executives. Benji Taylor will oversee design, Singhai will lead core product engineering, while Dinkin Flicka will be responsible for mobile engineering.
Before joining X, Bier had already earned a strong reputation in Silicon Valley as a successful consumer technology entrepreneur. He created the popular social application TBH, which was acquired by Facebook in 2017, before launching Gas, an anonymous compliments app for teenagers that was later acquired by Discord in 2023. His success in building fast growing social platforms established him as one of the technology industry’s most recognised product innovators.
Bier expressed appreciation to X owner Elon Musk and the company’s employees for the opportunity to lead the product team. He said he looks forward to continuing his involvement with the platform in his new capacity as an advisor.
His departure comes as X continues to invest heavily in product innovation and expanding its user base while competing with other major social media platforms for market share.
Nikita Bier holds degrees in Business Administration and Political Economy from the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated with honours. He also completed academic programmes in Denmark and France, as well as a summer Russian language course at the University of Virginia.
