Lionel Messi delivered another memorable performance on Wednesday, scoring twice to become the all time leading goalscorer in the Leagues Cup as Inter Miami opened their 2026 campaign with a 4 to 2 victory over Atletico San Luis.
The Argentine superstar, who inspired Inter Miami to their maiden Leagues Cup title shortly after joining the club in 2023, increased his tally in the tournament to 14 goals, setting a new scoring record in the competition involving Major League Soccer and Mexico’s Liga MX clubs.
The visitors made a dream start when David Rodriguez found the back of the net in the fourth minute to put Atletico San Luis ahead.
Miami quickly recovered from the early setback, with Messi restoring parity just seven minutes later. His goal sparked a dominant spell for the home side as they took control of the match.
Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia completed the turnaround in the 26th minute, giving Inter Miami a deserved lead before Messi struck again moments before the interval to extend the advantage.
Brazilian defender Micael added a fourth goal deep into first half stoppage time, leaving Atletico San Luis with a mountain to climb after the break.
The Mexican side managed to reduce the deficit in the second half through Rafa Llorente, but the late goal was only a consolation as Inter Miami comfortably secured all three points in their opening group fixture.
Elsewhere in Wednesday’s Leagues Cup action, FC Dallas recorded a 2 to 0 victory over Queretaro, while Leon claimed a narrow 1 to 0 away win against Nashville.
