Bezos Linked With Liverpool Stake Talks

Zoyols News

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has reportedly held discussions about joining a consortium interested in acquiring a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club, adding fresh attention to the club’s ownership structure.

The group is led by British Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, who has expressed interest in investing in the Premier League giants. Bhatia is also the son in law of billionaire steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal.

Reports on Wednesday indicated that Bezos has explored the possibility of becoming part of the consortium. However, no final decision has been made, and it remains uncertain whether the American billionaire will move forward with the proposed investment.

Bezos, whose wealth is estimated by Forbes at about £192 billion, has previously been linked with potential purchases of NFL franchises, including the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders. Despite showing interest, he ultimately chose not to pursue either acquisition.

Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, confirmed on Tuesday that they had been approached by Bhatia’s consortium regarding the purchase of a minority stake in the club. The discussions are believed to be at an early stage, with no agreement announced so far.

The development comes shortly after Bhatia stepped down from the board of Championship club Queens Park Rangers, ending an 18 year association after transferring his ownership stake to majority shareholder Ruben Gnanalingam.

Fenway Sports Group previously sold a minority stake in Liverpool to investment firm Dynasty in 2023, and any future agreement with Bhatia’s consortium is expected to follow a similar structure.

Reports also suggest that a successful deal would value Liverpool at more than six billion dollars, reflecting the club’s continued commercial growth and global appeal.

Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Major League Baseball franchise the Boston Red Sox, completed its takeover of Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million and has overseen one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history.
