The Bureau of Public Service Reforms says over 80 percent of federal ministries, departments and agencies now have functional websites and is pushing for wider use of artificial intelligence in government services.
Speaking in Abuja at the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Technical Team for the 2026 Federal Government Websites Ranking Exercise, Director-General Dr Dasuki Ibrahim Arabi noted that the figure has climbed from less than 30 percent when the ranking started. He said the target is to reach full coverage within the next one or two years while moving beyond paperless operations to actual AI adoption in public service delivery.
Arabi explained that the ranking exercise aims to make government information and services easier for citizens to access. He stressed that MDAs must provide accurate details, working contacts, and online platforms for Freedom of Information requests, while also allowing Nigerians to carry out transactions without visiting government offices.
For the 2026 edition, the assessment will shift to automated technology instead of one-off manual checks, allowing continuous monitoring of websites. Director of GovTech Africa, Fortune Toma, said the system will help capture findings while enabling team members to handle areas needing human judgment. He added that greater digitisation must come with stronger cybersecurity measures to protect government systems from emerging threats.
