Can Okpebholo Deliver 2.5m Edo Votes for Tinubu in 2027?

Zoyols News

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has raised eyebrows by promising to deliver 2.5 million votes for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election. While the statement has generated excitement within the ruling party, many political observers see it as overly ambitious rather than realistic.

Edo State had just over 2.5 million registered voters in 2023, yet only about 600,000 votes were cast in that presidential election. Peter Obi of the Labour Party won comfortably, taking 12 out of 18 local government areas, while Tinubu trailed far behind with fewer than 145,000 votes. Turning those numbers around so dramatically would require an unprecedented political shift that has never been seen in the state.

Beyond the numbers, ordinary residents continue to complain about the poor condition of major federal roads, such as the Benin–Sapele–Warri highway and the Benin–Agbor route. Daily frustrations with potholes, slow movement, and safety concerns remain high, and many believe these issues could influence how people vote.

Analysts also point to the distinct political character of Edo South, Central, and North senatorial districts, as well as lingering concerns about representation. They argue that no single governor can guarantee such a massive vote haul, stressing that elections are won through performance and tangible results rather than bold projections.
