In a major turning point for the Nigerian energy sector, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has begun a massive supply operation, delivering between 60 and 65 million litres of petrol daily to the domestic market. This surge in production not only satisfies the country’s entire daily demand but also leaves room for a significant surplus of up to 20 million litres, which is destined for the export market.
Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, shared these updates in Lagos, explaining that a comprehensive offtake agreement is now in place with several key marketers. This partnership is specifically designed to ensure that fuel reaches every corner of the country smoothly, putting an end to the supply gaps and instability that have frustrated Nigerians for years. According to Dangote, the priority is meeting the home demand of roughly 50 to 60 million litres before shipping the excess abroad.
To handle this nationwide distribution, the refinery is working under a framework approved by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority. Major players involved in this rollout include NNPC Retail, TotalEnergies, MRS Oil, and 11 Plc, alongside other prominent marketers like Rainoil, Ardova, and Bovas. By channeling fuel through these established companies, the refinery aims to bypass traditional bottlenecks and stop the speculative hoarding that often leads to artificial scarcity.
This shift marks the end of an era where Nigeria, despite being a top crude oil producer, relied heavily on expensive imports. Experts who spoke with Reports pointed out that by refining petrol locally at this scale, the country will save billions of dollars in foreign exchange every year. This move is expected to take significant pressure off the naira and help stabilize the national economy in the long run.
The sheer scale of the operation has impressed even the highest levels of industry leadership. During a recent tour of the facility, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Engr. Bayo Bashir Ojulari, described the refinery as a transformative asset for national energy security. He noted that while the plant was originally designed for a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, it has actually exceeded those figures, hitting a live production rate of 661,000 barrels.
The success of the refinery is being hailed as a source of national pride. Beyond just providing fuel, it represents Nigeria’s ability to solve its own industrial challenges using world-class technology. With the refinery operating at peak performance, the days of fuel queues and import dependence appear to be fading into the past.
