In a significant ruling delivered on Friday, an Adamawa State High Court sitting in Yola has sentenced a man named Goni to death for his role in a violent robbery operation. Justice Kaynson Lawanson, presiding over High Court III, handed down the verdict after the court was satisfied that the prosecution had successfully proved the charges of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery against the defendant.
The case dates back to the night of October 4, 2014, when Goni and four accomplices who are still at large raided the Kofare Quarters in Yola South Local Government Area. Armed with dangerous weapons, the gang targeted several residences, including those of Alhaji Lawan Suleiman, Alhaji Musa B. Umaru, Munir M. G, and Alhaji Ahmed Saibaru Shuaibu. During the terrifying ordeal, the victims were robbed of their cash, mobile phones, and other personal valuables.
Evidence brought before the court showed that the actions of the group were a direct violation of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act. While the court convicted Goni on the first two counts related to conspiracy and the primary robbery, he was discharged on the remaining three counts. However, the severity of the proven charges was enough to warrant the maximum sentence under Nigerian law.
Justice Lawanson emphasized that the prosecution had met the legal requirement of proving the case beyond a reasonable doubt. Consequently, the judge ordered that the convict be executed either by hanging or by lethal injection.
This judgment serves as a stern reminder of the judiciary’s stance on violent crime, especially as the authorities continue the search for the other four suspects involved in the 2014 raid.
