A commercial motorcyclist has lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident happened on Wednesday night along Imudia Street after hours of heavy rainfall that began around 5 p.m. and continued until about 9 p.m., leaving several parts of the area badly flooded.
Sources said the rider had parked his motorcycle close to a concrete drainage channel and taken cover inside a nearby makeshift shop as the downpour grew heavier. But as the flood intensified, the motorcycle was reportedly dragged into the fast moving drainage.
In an effort to recover it, the motorcyclist was said to have entered the water, but he was also caught by the current and swept away.
Residents later recovered his body, bringing the desperate attempt to a heartbreaking end.
The rainstorm was said to have triggered severe flooding across the area, with overflowing drains and strong currents rushing through a number of streets.
