Residents across parts of Lagos are facing a weekend of limited power as Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) implements load shedding across its network. The company confirmed on Saturday, January 24, 2026, that the measure became necessary due to the lingering instability of the national power grid following a total system collapse just a day earlier.
In a power update shared with the public, EKEDC explained that while some improvements have been recorded in generation, the grid is still far from being fully stable. As a result, the company has been forced to ration supply to prevent a complete system failure within its own infrastructure. This means many neighborhoods will experience scheduled outages until the broader transmission issues are resolved.
According to details gathered by Zoyols Blog, the current situation stems from the first major grid failure of 2026, which occurred on Friday. The disturbance was reportedly triggered by the tripping of multiple high-voltage transmission lines, causing generation to plunge to zero megawatts nationwide. Although the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has managed to restore power to some regions, the interconnected nature of the grid means that minor fluctuations can still lead to localized disruptions.
EKEDC noted that its technical teams are in constant communication with the TCN to monitor the recovery process and advocate for a speedier stabilization of the system. The distribution company expressed its commitment to providing regular updates as soon as more power becomes available for allocation to its customers.
The company also appealed for patience from residents and business owners who have expressed frustration over the inconsistent supply. While the goal is to return to a normal schedule as soon as possible, the safety and integrity of the electrical equipment remain the immediate priority during this period of volatility.
