Election 2027: Political Parties Race Against INEC’s Deadline

Zoyols News

With the 2027 general elections drawing closer, Nigeria’s political landscape is witnessing a frantic race against time. Political parties across the country are currently working around the clock to meet the strict deadlines imposed by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The most pressing of these requirements is the submission of comprehensive membership registers, which must be handed over to the commission by midnight tomorrow, May 10.

The past week has been defined by intense activity and significant shifts in allegiance. Political heavyweights have been engaged in deep realignments, leading to a wave of high-profile defections. The Nigeria Democratic Congress has emerged as a major focal point in this reshuffle, notably strengthening its ranks with the arrival of three senators and eighteen members of the House of Representatives. These movements have kept party secretariats busy as they scramble to update their records ahead of the cutoff.

Zoyols News has been monitoring the ruling All Progressives Congress as it moves through its internal electoral calendar with speed. The party wrapped up the sale of its nomination forms on May 6 and concluded the collection phase just twenty-four hours later. By yesterday, the focus had shifted to the screening of aspirants, a critical step in ensuring that all candidates meet the necessary criteria before the primary contests begin in earnest.

The momentum continues today with two major political gatherings scheduled to take place. Both the Nigeria Democratic Congress and the Social Democratic Party are holding their national conventions. While the NDC has converged in the federal capital of Abuja for its high-stakes meeting, the SDP has moved its primary activities to Bauchi. These conventions are expected to set the tone for the coming months, as parties finalize their leadership structures and prepare for the broader electoral battle ahead.
