The importance of cybersecurity awareness came into focus again at the Lagos State Civil Service Commission Career Week 2026, as participants were urged to pay greater attention to digital security in an increasingly connected workplace.
The Career Week, held under the theme “Driving Business Process Automation in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) within the Lagos State Public Service,” brought together discussions around digital transformation, workplace readiness and the changing demands of work within the public sector.
ESET Nigeria was represented at the event by its Managing Director, Olufemi Ake, who delivered a presentation focused on cybersecurity awareness and the growing need for safer digital practices among employees.
Ake highlighted the importance of cybersecurity as public institutions continue to depend on digital systems, connected devices and online platforms to carry out their daily activities. He noted that while technology can make government operations more efficient and improve collaboration, greater digital dependence also exposes organisations to new security risks.
ESET emphasised that technology alone cannot guarantee a secure digital environment, pointing to the important role employees and other users play in protecting organisational systems and information.
The company explained that practical knowledge and vigilance can help users recognise suspicious activity, question unusual requests and make better decisions when using digital platforms and devices. Developing these habits, it said, can reduce the risks associated with everyday digital activities.
Cybersecurity awareness was also linked to career development during the presentation. ESET noted that as workplaces become increasingly digital, professionals are expected not only to understand how to use modern tools but also to know how to use them responsibly and securely.
The issue is particularly relevant to public sector organisations, which operate large information systems and provide services that depend heavily on digital infrastructure.
