The Chioma Ajunwa Foundation, in collaboration with the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese community in Nigeria, has finalised plans for the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, June 26, at the Police College in Ikeja, Lagos, where stakeholders from different sectors are expected to unite in promoting a drug free society.
Convener of the programme, retired Deputy Commissioner of Police and Olympic gold medallist Chioma Ajunwa Opara, said this year’s edition is designed to make an even greater impact by combining sports with public advocacy to discourage drug abuse, especially among young people.
She disclosed that several distinguished guests are expected to grace the occasion. The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China will attend as the Special Guest of Honour, while the Deputy Consul General of Germany in Lagos will serve as the Guest of Honour, reflecting growing international support for anti drug campaigns and youth development initiatives in Nigeria.
Also expected at the event is Senator Ned Nwoko, who will serve as the Vice Chairman of the occasion, alongside the Executive Chairman of Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area, highlighting the participation of government at the grassroots level.
Traditional institutions will also play a prominent role. Eze Christian Okechukwu, the Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, will serve as the Royal Father of the Day, while Assistant Inspector General of Police Omolara, Commandant of the Police College, Ikeja, will be honoured as the Royal Mother of the Day.
The programme is also expected to attract religious leaders, members of the diplomatic community, security agencies, sports personalities and other notable guests, including Bishop Chris Akano of Revival City Church, Ikeja.
Ajunwa Opara explained that this year’s campaign stands out because it brings together government institutions, diplomatic missions, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies and sports stakeholders to strengthen the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
As part of activities lined up for the celebration, the Chioma Ajunwa Veteran Female Football Team will take on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency WADA Male Team in a novelty football match on Thursday, June 25, at the Police College Field in GRA, Ikeja. Kick off is scheduled for 3 pm.
The organisers believe the friendly match will further promote healthy living, youth empowerment and greater awareness of the dangers associated with drug abuse while reinforcing the campaign’s message through the power of sports.
