In a significant move to bolster the educational landscape of the North-East, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has officially handed over 12 newly completed housing units to the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA). The project consists of two modern two-storey buildings, each housing six spacious three-bedroom flats designed specifically to accommodate the institution’s academic staff.
This intervention comes as a much-needed relief for the university, which, like many growing institutions, has faced hurdles in providing quality housing for its lecturers and researchers. By providing these quarters, the governor aims to create a more stable and conducive environment for those responsible for training Nigeria’s future health professionals.
During the inauguration ceremony in Bauchi, the Governor was represented by the Borno State Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Mustapha Gubio. He explained that although the project is located outside his home state, it is a vital part of a broader strategy to strengthen the educational foundation of the entire region. According to Zulum, supporting institutions like FUHSA is an investment in the collective progress of the North-East.
The leadership of the university expressed deep appreciation for the Governor’s generosity. Professor Bala Audu, the Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration, Professor Mohammed Alkali, noted that the gesture could not have come at a better time. He emphasized that the new flats would go a long way in easing the burden on staff, allowing them to focus more effectively on their academic duties.
Reports indicate that the university management has already pledged to put a strict maintenance plan in place to ensure the facilities remain in top condition for years to come. This collaboration serves as a shining example of how inter-state support can drive development in the Nigerian education sector.
