Yeni Kuti, daughter of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has appealed for calm following the rising tension between music star Wizkid and her brother, Seun Kuti, urging all sides to embrace unity rather than deepen divisions.
Speaking in a video shared online , Yeni explained that she intentionally stayed away from the heated exchanges because of her close personal bond with Wizkid. She described the singer as someone she genuinely cares about, noting that public clashes between influential figures often end up hurting innocent people caught in the middle.
According to her, the long history she shares with Wizkid made it impossible to take sides or join in the verbal attacks. She recalled knowing him long before fame, when he was still finding his footing in the music scene and spent time performing at the Afrika Shrine. That shared past, she said, leaves no room for bitterness or resentment.
Yeni stressed that disagreements should be handled quickly and quietly before they spiral out of control. She expressed regret that the situation was not addressed earlier and called on everyone involved to mend fences and remember that they belong to the same community.
She also warned that the ongoing feud sends the wrong signal at a time when Nigerian music and culture are being celebrated on the global stage. In her view, the damage goes beyond individuals or families, reflecting poorly on the country as a whole.
Drawing comparisons with other legendary figures, she questioned why the legacy of someone who created an entire music movement continues to be dragged into present-day disputes. She pointed out that Fela’s name still commands respect decades after his passing, a testament to the lasting impact of his work.
Her message was clear: energy should be focused on meaningful progress rather than attacking icons who have already left their mark. She urged critics to show restraint and channel their voices toward building, not tearing down.
The tension flared earlier in the week after Wizkid weighed in on an online clash involving his fan base and Seun Kuti. The disagreement reportedly began when Seun accused Wizkid’s supporters of disrespecting Fela’s legacy by comparing the late Afrobeat legend with the Grammy-winning singer.
