The Athletics Federation of Nigeria says it will continue to watch over athletes and step in when deals look harmful. President Tonobok Okowa noted that no agreement is fixed forever and the federation is ready to review or cancel any arrangement that works against the athlete or Nigeria.
The federation made it clear it has not approved any agent or agency to offer scholarships on its behalf. Athletes and their families have been advised to be careful before signing anything. Minors are especially warned against entering contracts without their parents or guardians.
In one case the AFN already advised an athlete to end a deal involving an agent and a school because it was not in the athlete’s best interest. The federation also stated it will not work with Auburn University in the United States for as long as coach Ken remains there, citing concerns that he discourages Nigerian athletes from representing the country.
Okowa said foreign scholarships and training opportunities are welcome when they help athletes grow, but they must never stop them from competing for Nigeria. He urged athletes to seek proper advice before signing any papers and assured them that the federation will keep protecting their interests.
