WhatsApp is giving Android users more information about calls from unknown numbers, offering additional context that could help them decide whether to answer unfamiliar calls.
The new feature may indicate when an incoming number is registered in another country and whether the caller belongs to any of the same WhatsApp groups as the recipient.
According to WhatsApp, the added information is designed to help users assess unexpected calls before responding, especially as scammers often rely on urgency and pressure to persuade potential victims to act quickly.
“Unknown calls can sometimes be used to create a sense of urgency and pressure people into making quick decisions,” WhatsApp said.
The platform explained that providing more context when an unfamiliar call comes in could give users a better opportunity to decide whether to answer, ignore or block the caller.
The latest update builds on WhatsApp’s existing privacy and security tools, which allow users to block and report suspicious accounts while also adjusting settings to better protect their accounts.
WhatsApp said it would continue developing security features aimed at helping users stay in control of their personal conversations and calls while strengthening protection against potential threats.
