Greenland and Denmark Turn Down Trump’s Hospital Ship Proposal

zoyols

Denmark and its autonomous Arctic territory of Greenland have turned down a proposal from Donald Trump to send a U.S. naval hospital ship to the region. Authorities said the offer was unnecessary, pointing to their existing public healthcare system as already capable of serving residents.

The suggestion came after Trump posted on social media that he planned to send what he called “a great hospital boat” to Greenland, claiming it would help treat people who were allegedly not receiving proper care. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen responded directly, making it clear that medical care in Greenland is already free for citizens. He stressed that healthcare access does not depend on income, and he also noted that this differs from the healthcare model in the United States, where treatment can be costly for many people.

Officials in Denmark supported the same position. Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen explained that Greenlandic residents receive treatment locally when possible, and are transported to Denmark for specialised medical procedures if needed. He added that the territory’s healthcare system was already functioning adequately, making any special foreign initiative unnecessary.

Healthcare across Greenland is publicly funded, with several regional hospitals serving communities scattered across the vast Arctic landscape. The main hospital in the capital city of Nuuk serves patients from different parts of the island. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also spoke about the issue indirectly, expressing pride that healthcare in Denmark is available equally to all citizens regardless of financial status.

The discussion came shortly after a real medical emergency involving a U.S. submarine crew member near Greenland’s waters. Danish Arctic defence forces evacuated the sailor to a hospital in Nuuk after he requested urgent medical assistance during an incident on board the vessel, showing that medical cooperation between Denmark and the United States already exists in emergency situations.

Trump accompanied his announcement with an AI-generated image of the U.S. Navy hospital ship USNS Mercy and posted the message that the ship was “on the way.” However, officials never clearly confirmed whether the vessel was actually being deployed or if the message was more symbolic. Reports suggested the plan might have been coordinated with U.S. Arctic envoy Jeff Landry, though no official deployment details were released.

Greenlandic representative in the Danish parliament Aaja Chemnitz acknowledged that Greenland’s healthcare system has challenges, but said improvements should come through cooperation with Denmark rather than external political proposals. She also compared Denmark’s strong economic and healthcare development with the ongoing policy debates surrounding healthcare access in the United States.

Economic analysts have previously warned that Greenland could face financial pressure due to an ageing population and a shrinking workforce, though cooperation agreements with Denmark continue to support patient care and medical infrastructure development.

Trump has repeatedly suggested that the United States should maintain stronger strategic influence over Greenland for security reasons. Earlier remarks about potentially taking control of the territory, even by force, have since softened after diplomatic engagements with NATO leadership.

In Nuuk, public reaction has been mostly quiet, with many residents expressing fatigue over the repeated political attention. Some locals simply dismissed the controversy, preferring to focus on daily life rather than international political debates.
