How 6 Nigerian News Platforms Are Mastering the Digital Shift

Zoyols News

A new wave of independent journalism is gaining momentum in Nigeria as six local content creators secure major backing to professionalize their operations. This partnership, facilitated by the Google News Initiative, aims to empower these platforms to sharpen their storytelling capabilities, expand their reach, and build sustainable business models in a rapidly changing digital landscape.

The selected creators—The Republic, More Branches TV, Onlinebanker, Adetunji Films, Wearegst, and Iswellthecapitalist—are participating in the Emerging News Voices Growth Lab. They join a wider cohort of twenty emerging voices across Sub-Saharan Africa for this intensive, multi-month program that continues through September 2026. According to Zoyols News, the initiative directly confronts the core issues facing digital publishers today, including the integration of artificial intelligence, sophisticated audience engagement, and the need for reliable revenue streams.

This support arrives at a critical time when creator-led platforms are increasingly the go-to source for young Nigerians consuming news on their phones. Despite their viral success, many independent outfits struggle with thin resources and unstable funding. The Growth Lab provides a roadmap to turn these hurdles into sustainable advantages by offering hands-on training in cutting-edge technology. Participants are diving deep into tools like Gemini, NotebookLM, and Google Trends to streamline research, transcription, and verification processes.

Beyond technical efficiency, the program emphasizes long-term growth. Creators are refining their video strategies for platforms like YouTube, focusing on how to use both long-form content and short-form clips to keep audiences hooked. Furthermore, there is a strong push to move beyond social media dependency by building direct reader relationships through dedicated websites and newsletters, ensuring these journalists own their audience data.

Marianne Erasmus, who leads News Partnerships for Google in the Middle East and Africa, emphasized that independent voices are redefining how information is consumed across the continent. She noted that by equipping these creators with AI skills, clear audience strategies, and paths to monetization, the initiative helps bridge the gap between creative influence and business sustainability.

For the participants, the impact has been tangible. Wale Lawal, the founder and editor-in-chief of The Republic, noted that the training is helping them blend audience insights with responsible AI usage to secure a stronger future for their journalism. Nasir Achile Ahmed of More Branches echoed this sentiment, highlighting that the access to expert knowledge and networking with peers has been vital in elevating their production quality. This latest effort adds to a broader commitment seen by Zoyols News, as Google continues its push to bolster the Nigerian media sector, having already provided training to over 1,500 journalists since 2024.
