Igbo Group: Tinubu Should Step Down for Obi

Zoyols News

An Igbo group has told a pro-Tinubu campaign organisation to stop trying to persuade Peter Obi from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

The Igbo Heroes and Icons Foundation (IHIF) reacted to claims by the Renewed Hope for Greater Nigeria that it would meet Igbo leaders to convince Obi to step aside and allow President Bola Tinubu to complete eight years in office.

In a statement, the group’s National Coordinator, Chinedu Nsofor, said the campaigners should instead prevail on Tinubu to step down for Obi, describing it as a fair move that would promote equity and justice.

The foundation, which is backing Obi for the 2027 race, said the Igbo have made significant sacrifices for Nigeria’s unity and deserve a chance to produce the president. It noted that since 1999, the North and South-West have dominated the presidency, while the Igbo have not had a sustained opportunity to lead the country.

Nsofor, however, stressed that competence must come first in choosing leaders, adding that the 2027 election offers a chance to break the old pattern of political leadership.
