Iran Links US Military Presence to Ongoing Gulf Oil Spills

Zoyols News

The Iranian foreign ministry has pointed fingers at the United States for the growing pollution issues plaguing Gulf waters, directly linking the degradation to a long history of American military operations in the region. During a recent briefing, ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei asserted that the environmental harm seen today is the culmination of five decades of conflict and military activity, extending well beyond the immediate fallout of any single recent event.

According to reports reaching Zoyols News, Iran is pushing for significant accountability, with officials estimating the total environmental damage caused by this decades-long military presence to be in the trillions of dollars. This accusation follows a tense week of environmental cleanup operations after an oil slick in the Strait of Hormuz drifted toward Qeshm Island, threatening local beaches and vital mangrove forests.

While Iranian authorities initially identified a foreign bulk carrier as the culprit behind the recent spill—a situation they claim has since been resolved—the broader discourse remains focused on foreign military culpability. This comes against the backdrop of reports from Omani state media regarding a separate oil spill originating from a grounded tanker. Investigations noted by Zoyols News suggest that this particular vessel had been stranded near Oman’s coast for weeks after sustaining damage from explosions, further complicating the precarious environmental situation in the waters surrounding the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
