Nollywood veteran Ireti Doyle has finally shared why she chose to remain quiet about her divorce from Patrick Doyle, refusing to turn their private matter into public drama. In a candid conversation with Morayo Afolabi Brown, she explained that some things simply aren’t anyone else’s business.
When asked why she and her ex-husband never spoke publicly about their split, Ireti said the only people she owed any explanation to were her immediate family and the friends who witnessed their wedding. Social media, she explained, is a place where people rarely care about the truth. “The larger audience you’re performing for does not care,” she said. “I personally would never knowingly give myself up as clickbait. You’re never going to win, so who are you explaining your matter to?”
Ireti reflected on the emotional toll of ending long-term relationships. According to her, breakups, especially marriages, are inherently painful, and energy is better spent reflecting and healing rather than ranting online. She urged people to look inward, understand what went wrong, and learn from it to avoid repeating the same mistakes. “The end of a long-term relationship, let alone marriage, is painful. Whatever the circumstances, not apportioning blame is painful. You need to spend the energy you’re using to perform for an audience who doesn’t care to sit down, go deep within, understand what went wrong for the sole purpose of not making the same mistake again.”
Ireti and Patrick tied the knot in 2004, and their divorce was publicly confirmed by Ireti in 2023. Despite the split, she continues to use the name ‘Ireti Doyle,’ explaining that it represents nearly 30 years of her personal and professional identity. Meanwhile, Patrick Doyle has moved on and is now married to media personality Funmi Iyanda.
Both have maintained a level of respect in their public statements. Patrick clarified past social media posts, saying they were not meant to cast shade on Ireti. He praised her as a dedicated provider and a first-class mother, adding that he harbors no ill feelings despite the marriage ending.
For Ireti, staying silent wasn’t about hiding anything—it was about protecting her peace and refusing to let private matters become public spectacle. Her approach highlights a deliberate choice to prioritize self-reflection and growth over online validation, a lesson she hopes others will take to heart.
