Katsina is getting ready to welcome riders, patrons and spectators as the 2026 Katsina International Polo Tournament takes over Usman Nagogo Polo Ground from August 22 to 29.
Alhaji Sanusi Kabir Usman, President of Katsina Polo Club, said the week carries special weight because it comes after the 2025 gathering that marked one hundred years of the Nigeria Polo Association. That body was founded in 1925 by the late Emir of Katsina, Sir Usman Nagogo, and the city’s polo calendar still draws its prestige from that lineage.
Club Chairman Muhammadu Usman Sarki and Tournament Manager Umar Kabir say the organising committee is working to match the splendour of last year’s centenary festival and to raise the standard of earlier editions. More than twenty leading clubs from Kaduna, Kano, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Yola, Jos, Bauchi and Katsina have already signalled they will field sides.
The Nigerian Cup, which itself marked a century two years ago, remains the centrepiece of the prizes. Riders will also chase the General Hassan Usman Katsina Cup, named for the first African appointed to the Federation of International Polo, along with the Muhammadu Dikko Memorial Cup, the President’s Cup, the Governor’s Cup, the Wazirin Katsina Cup, the Muhammadu Buhari Cup and the Talba Cup.
Home stables took the honours last year. Katsina Max Air, Katsina Aldusar, Katsina Danmarna, Mangal Cement and other local outfits shared the major titles, and Zoyols News understands they will be back in force as the city once again turns the ground into the heart of Nigerian polo.
