Operatives of the Kebbi Hisbah Board have detained several suspects, including foreign nationals, during a series of operations carried out in Birnin Kebbi over alleged immoral activities and drug related offences.
The agency, which operates under the Kebbi State Ministry of Religious Affairs, confirmed that a young man and woman were arrested at the Filin Idi area of Birnin Kebbi over allegations of engaging in acts considered contrary to Islamic teachings and societal moral standards.
The development was disclosed in a statement by the Director of Shariah of the board, Sirajo Kamba.
According to Kamba, the operation also led to the arrest of seven suspected drug users, while several other individuals reportedly escaped from the scene by jumping over a fence during the raid.
He further revealed that officials of the board later raided a house located in Gesse Phase 2 area of Birnin Kebbi, where seven women and two young men were allegedly found engaging in activities linked to drug abuse and other immoral behaviour.
Kamba stated that some suspects managed to flee before operatives could apprehend them.
The Hisbah official also disclosed that 23 foreign nationals were recently handed over to the board by the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation.
According to him, immigration officers came across the individuals during routine patrols and checks aimed at identifying illegal immigrants and monitoring suspicious activities involving non citizens.
He explained that the young men and women were allegedly found wandering under circumstances considered suspicious, prompting their detention for further profiling and investigation.
Kamba said all the arrested individuals are currently being investigated by the Hisbah Board as authorities continue efforts to address activities considered harmful to public morality and social order within the state.
