Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have taken into custody a 22 year old man, identified as Onipede Ojo, over allegations of impersonating a police officer after reportedly stealing a uniform and other personal items belonging to an officer.
According to the command, the suspect allegedly made away with a police officer’s bag containing a camouflage uniform, warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card and several other belongings. He was later accused of using the stolen items to present himself as a serving officer.
A video that circulated on social media platform X showed Ojo claiming he picked up the uniform, which reportedly had the name tag of an inspector identified as Jimoh Weheed, along Maryland Road in Lagos.
His actions, however, raised suspicion among residents who noticed inconsistencies in his behaviour and mannerisms. Members of the public confronted him, and it was during the encounter that he was allegedly exposed as an impostor.
He was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue. Authorities also stated that he will be charged to court once inquiries are concluded.
The command commended residents for their alertness and willingness to assist law enforcement, noting that their quick response helped prevent further abuse of police identity.
At the same time, the police strongly cautioned against any form of jungle justice, stressing that no matter the offence, individuals must not take the law into their own hands.
They reiterated that Lagos State laws do not support extrajudicial punishment and urged the public to always hand over suspects to the appropriate authorities for proper investigation and prosecution.
The command further encouraged residents to remain vigilant and continue working closely with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements and individuals, while allowing due process of law to take its course.
