Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has dismissed the recent wave of defections by politicians, particularly governors leaving the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress and other parties, as mere distractions. In his latest bi-monthly newsletter, he urged Nigerians to shift their attention from political maneuvering to the issues that truly affect their daily lives.
“Nigerians should focus on when hunger and deprivation leave the country,” Makinde said. “Only then can prosperity return, and people’s pride be restored. We cannot keep pretending all is well simply because it is reported that way. Inequality is widening. While the wealthy adjust, the poor continue to sink, and that is what demands our attention.”
He cautioned that political realignments should not divert the public from pressing challenges. “Many have been caught up in the recent defections, analyzing every handshake and silence,” he noted. “But the conversation should not be about who is moving; it should be about what is moving. The only defection that truly matters is the one that has yet to happen the defection of hunger from our land.”
On the 2027 elections, Makinde emphasized that the Nigerian people will ultimately decide the outcome. He reassured that the PDP is committed to presenting solutions that bring relief where others have caused pain. “Regardless of predictions or engineered defections, the final decision lies with Nigerians,” he said. “Our responsibility is to continue proving that we can deliver relief and address the real needs of the people.”
