Many Mistakenly Think the Kutis Use Drugs, Says Made

Zoyols News

Afrobeats singer Made Kuti has dismissed the long standing belief that members of the Kuti family are involved in drug use, describing the claim as a false impression that has followed the family for years.

The singer spoke during the United States Mission’s 250th Independence Day celebration held in Lagos, where he addressed public assumptions about his family and their lifestyle. The event took place on Wednesday at the residence of the United States Consul General in Ikoyi.

Made said many people are quick to associate the Kuti name with smoking and narcotics, but insisted that the narrative does not reflect the reality of most members of the family. According to him, he does not smoke, while his father has also stopped smoking.

He said the public perception has created a misleading image of the family, even though the assumption does not apply to them in the way many people believe.

Beyond that, the music star also spoke briefly about his personality, describing himself as hardworking, passionate and loyal. In a lighthearted moment, he added that his loyalty should not come as a surprise because he is a married man.

When asked which Nigerian artiste he currently enjoys listening to the most, Made said he listens to the music of his grandfather, staying close to the sound and legacy that shaped the Kuti name.

He also used the moment to draw attention to climate change, urging Nigerians not to overlook environmental issues despite the country’s economic and social struggles. According to him, while the nation is facing serious cultural and financial concerns, the conversation around climate change remains just as important and deserves urgent attention.

Made said a lot of people wrongly assume that he smokes, but that is not the case. He added that his father no longer smokes either, stressing that the common belief that the Kutis are generally into narcotics is far from the truth for most members of the family.
